Societal Disconnect and Loss of Community
A project focused on Roy Oldenburg's Third Place Theory, which proposes that humans need a space beyond work and home to foster meaningful connections. Our modern reality, however, starkly contrasts with the rich communal experiences of previous generations, leading to a loss of the sense of belonging.
1st Place: Home, 2nd Place: Work, 3rd Place: ?????
My goal with 3rd Place is to highlight this loss and raise awareness about the need for togetherness. Drawing on personal and peer experiences, I illustrated the limitations and successes of modern communication, emphasising that while we have individual voices, we are one society.
Together, we can reclaim a true sense of community.
Throughout the development of outcomes, I pulled research via digital surveys, organisation support, advertisements for participation, family archives, peer input and social media.
In Issues 1 and 2 of 3rd Place, I explored the deindustrialisation of trades, the decline of North East spirit, and the shuttering of high streets and cultural venues. I examined the challenges facing younger generations, the financial strains on households, and the shift to a digitally led world post-2020. The discussion also spans the loss of in-person connections, the complexities of modern relationships, social burnout, and finding hobbies as new social hubs. In order to provide an element of hope within a complex discussion, I highlighted the importance of libraries, community initiatives, the benefits of outdoor activities, and upcoming local events.
